Devitrification occurs in fused during the firing process whereby the surface of the glass develops a whitish scum or wrinkles instead of a smooth glossy shine.
Commonly referred to as “devit” the condition is normally considered undesirable on fused glass art
It is possible to use devitrification as a deliberate artistic technique.
A very low-lead overglaze that prevents devitrification on kiln-fired glass projects that is safe for food-bearing surfaces.
